WHY VACCINATE

The Rabies Vaccine

Pre-exposure protection that buys vital time if you are ever bitten or scratched

Two Schedules — Standard or Accelerated

Pre-Exposure Protection Matters

Rabies attacks the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, spread through bites, scratches or saliva from infected animals — dogs are responsible for around 99% of human cases worldwide. Pre-exposure vaccination is a three-dose course, giving around 2 to 3 years' protection. We offer two schedules: the standard course on days 0, 7 and 21–28, or an accelerated course on days 0, 3 and 7 that completes within a week if you're travelling at short notice. It doesn't remove the need for medical care if you're bitten, but it simplifies the treatment you'd need and buys valuable time in areas where care may be harder to reach.

  • Two Schedules to Choose From

    Standard — 3 doses on days 0, 7 and 21–28 (£70 per dose). Accelerated — 3 doses on days 0, 3 and 7 (£85 per dose), completing within a week if you're travelling soon.

  • Simplifies Post-Bite Care

If vaccinated and later bitten, you'll typically need just 2 more doses and no immunoglobulin — unvaccinated people need 5 doses plus immunoglobulin, which isn't always available locally.

  • Especially Relevant for Adventure Travel

Worth prioritising for remote or rural trips, trekking, and travel with children, who are more likely to be bitten and less likely to report it.

GOOD TO KNOW

If You Are Bitten or Scratched

Wash the wound immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, apply antiseptic, and seek medical attention as soon as possible — even if you've had the pre-exposure course. Vaccination simplifies treatment, but it doesn't replace the need for prompt medical care.

RABIES FAQs

Common Questions

No — you'll still need medical attention if bitten or scratched, even after the pre-exposure course. What changes is the treatment: vaccinated people typically need just 2 more doses and no immunoglobulin, rather than 5 doses plus immunoglobulin.

Ideally book at least 4 weeks ahead so you can complete the standard course (days 0, 7 and 21–28). If you're travelling sooner than that, our accelerated course (days 0, 3 and 7) completes within a week — so it's still worth getting in touch even at short notice.

Wash the wound immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes, apply antiseptic, and get medical attention as soon as you can — this matters whether or not you've been vaccinated.

Yes. We offer an accelerated three-dose course given on days 0, 3 and 7 at £85 per dose, which completes within a week — compared with the standard course on days 0, 7 and 21–28 at £70 per dose. Tell us your travel dates and our pharmacist will confirm which schedule is right for you.

Side effects are usually mild — soreness at the injection site, headache, nausea, muscle aches or a slight fever. Serious reactions are rare.
