The contraceptive pill is free, whether you get it with a prescription or directly from a pharmacy.
Who can get the contraceptive pill without a prescription
You may be able to get the contraceptive pill from a pharmacy if you want to:
- start the pill for the first time, or
- restart the pill after a break
If you already have a prescription, you can continue to use it as normal. You can also choose to get the pill from a pharmacy without a prescription if you prefer.
What to expect at the pharmacy
You will have a private consultation with a pharmacist. They will ask about your health and may check your height, weight, and blood pressure.
The pharmacist will explain how to take the pill and talk you through possible side effects. If needed, they can refer you to a GP or a sexual health clinic.
If the pharmacist supplies the pill, they can update your GP, but only if you give permission. Your information will not be shared with anyone else.
Types of pill available
The pharmacist may offer you:
- the combined pill
- the progestogen-only pill
- emergency contraception
Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception is available from the pharmacy without a prescription. It can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your usual contraception has failed, for example if a condom has split or you have missed pills. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible. A pharmacist will speak with you in private to make sure it is suitable and explain how it works.
Emergency contraception is free of charge.
