Before your appointment: use olive oil drops in the affected ear 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days to help soften the wax. Do not use drops if you have, or think you may have, a perforated eardrum. Please tell us before your appointment if you take blood thinners or high-dose steroids, have had ear surgery, or find loud noises hard to bear. Microsuction may not suit you, and we will advise you.

Microsuction may not be suitable if the eardrum is discharging, and if we see a perforation we will advise you to be referred to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) service. Do not use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum.
